The spirit of Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary came alive in Abeokuta South as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives candidate for the constituency, Chief Toyin Amuzu, TA, distributed free 4kg cooking gas refills to 1,000 residents as part of a social support programme designed to ease the burden on families.
The initiative, held to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, was described by Amuzu as part of his commitment to putting people first and providing practical support to residents at a time when the cost of living continues to place pressure on households.
Amuzu, the Asiwaju Leragun Egba, said the gesture was not merely about celebrating independence but about demonstrating what people-centred leadership should look like.
He said true independence must also mean breaking free from every form of political slavery that keeps citizens trapped in hardship, hopelessness and dependence, insisting that government must exist to serve the people and not turn public resources into instruments of political control.
According to him, citizens must not allow themselves to be permanently subjected to a system where a few people determine their future while the majority continue to struggle.
He urged the people of Abeokuta South to recognise the power of their votes and use it to demand leadership that respects their dignity, welfare and aspirations.
Amuzu advised residents of Abeokuta South to support the PDP candidates across the ballot, from the governorship to Senate and House of Reps to the State House of Assembly, saying the party was prepared to make the welfare of citizens the centrepiece of its programmes and policies.
“We want our people to know that they are not alone. Leadership must be about the people, their welfare and their future. This is why we are putting people first,” Amuzu said.
He said the PDP was ready to restore hope and rebuild the future of Ogun State, stressing that the party's Itura Dé mantra had become a defining message among its candidates.
According to him, Itura Dé represents the promise of relief, better governance and policies that directly respond to the challenges confronting ordinary citizens.
Amuzu therefore called on voters to vote for all PDP candidates, stressing that citizens must not only participate in the electoral process but also protect their votes.
“Vote all PDP candidates and stand with your votes to protect it. Your vote is your power and that power must be used to determine the kind of leadership we want,” he said.
He maintained that the PDP's vision was anchored on restoring hope to communities, improving the welfare of citizens and rebuilding confidence in government.
The Abeokuta South PDP candidate said the 1,000-person gas intervention was one of several ways of demonstrating that political leadership should extend beyond campaign promises and translate into tangible assistance to the people.
He reaffirmed his commitment to a representation that remains close to the people, responsive to their needs and focused on practical solutions.
The PDP House of Representatives hopeful also urged residents to see the Independence Anniversary as an opportunity to renew their commitment to a better Nigeria, saying true independence must include freedom from hunger, hardship, hopelessness and policies that leave ordinary citizens behind.
He said the PDP's message going into the 2027 elections was clear, restore hope, rebuild the future and put the people first.
