Students’ body calls for sustained investigation, stronger environmental monitoring and protection of affected schoolchildren across Ijebu communities.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), National Headquarters, has presented its fact-finding report on the recent gas emission incident affecting secondary school students in parts of Ijebu communities in Ogun State to the state’s Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, calling for sustained investigations and urgent measures to safeguard students’ health and welfare.
The presentation followed a press statement issued by NANS last week, in which the national students’ body expressed concern over the incident reportedly affecting students in Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-Igbo, Ago-Iwoye and neighbouring communities.
Concerned about the implications of the incident for students’ safety and the learning environment, the association constituted a delegation to visit affected schools, assess the situation, engage relevant stakeholders and document its findings on the circumstances surrounding the reported gas emission.
According to the association, the exercise was aimed at obtaining a clearer understanding of the incident, identifying concerns relating to students’ welfare and bringing its observations to the attention of the state government for appropriate action.
NANS Presents Findings, Highlights Students’ Safety
Following the completion of its fact-finding exercise, the NANS delegation formally submitted its report to Commissioner Oresanya, outlining its observations and concerns regarding the incident and the need for government intervention.
The association said the report was intended to contribute to ongoing efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the gas emission and ensure that appropriate preventive measures are implemented to protect students and other residents of the affected communities.
Although the precise cause of the incident was not established in the information released by NANS, the association stressed the importance of sustained investigation and effective environmental monitoring to prevent a recurrence.
Oresanya Commends Students’ Initiative
The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, reportedly welcomed the delegation and commended NANS for taking what he described as a responsible, constructive and fact-based approach to addressing an issue of public concern.
The commissioner also provided explanations to the delegation on possible causes, circumstances and environmental factors that could be associated with the reported gas emission, offering additional context to the students’ representatives.
NANS expressed appreciation for the commissioner’s reception and willingness to engage with the student community, describing collaboration between government institutions and student representatives as essential to addressing environmental concerns that directly affect young people.
The association maintained that constructive engagement between stakeholders could help strengthen public understanding, support the identification of the incident’s root causes and encourage the development of lasting solutions.
Association Calls for Sustained Investigation
Beyond the submission of its report, NANS urged the Ogun State Government and relevant environmental agencies to sustain investigations into the incident and take appropriate steps to prevent similar occurrences.
The association called for stronger environmental safety monitoring around schools and affected communities, alongside preventive measures designed to identify potential hazards and minimise risks to students and residents.
It also emphasised the need to ensure that students affected by the incident receive appropriate attention and that school environments remain safe, healthy and conducive to learning.
The call places renewed emphasis on the responsibility of relevant authorities to investigate reported environmental incidents, establish their causes through appropriate technical assessments and communicate findings and necessary safety guidance to affected communities.
Students’ Welfare Remains a Priority
NANS reiterated its commitment to protecting students’ welfare, promoting environmental safety and engaging government authorities constructively on matters affecting the Nigerian student population.
The association said its intervention was driven by the need to ensure that incidents capable of threatening students’ health and safety are properly investigated and that practical measures are adopted to reduce the risk of recurrence.
The development also highlights the importance of timely communication among environmental authorities, school administrators, parents and communities whenever potentially hazardous emissions are reported near educational institutions.
As investigations continue, the association urged relevant authorities to give priority to the health and safety of students while working towards a clear understanding of what happened in the affected Ijebu communities.
The cause of the reported gas emission, the specific substances involved and the full extent of its impact were not detailed in the statement announcing the report’s presentation. Further technical findings from the relevant authorities would therefore be important in establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
NANS concluded by reaffirming that the safety, health and welfare of Nigerian students must remain a priority.
