Senator Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi (Okanlomo of Ibadanland) has congratulated Nigerians, particularly the good people of Oyo State, on the occasion of Democracy Day, urging citizens to remain committed to the ideals of democracy, good governance, and active civic participation.
In a statement issued to commemorate the anniversary, Senator Akanbi described Democracy Day as an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by patriots who fought for democratic governance and the responsibility of citizens to protect and strengthen the nation's democratic institutions.
While congratulating Nigerians on the milestone, the Okanlomo of Ibadanland expressed deep concern over the prevailing economic challenges confronting the country. He noted that rising inflation, declining purchasing power, unemployment, the soaring cost of food items, and the general increase in the cost of living have placed enormous pressure on households and businesses. According to him, governance must be people-oriented, with policies designed to improve the welfare and economic wellbeing of the masses rather than worsen their hardship.
Senator Akanbi, however, emphasized that insecurity remains one of the greatest threats facing the nation today. He lamented the increasing cases of kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, armed robbery, and violent attacks on communities across the country, noting that many Nigerians now live in fear while farmers are unable to access their farmlands, thereby worsening food insecurity and contributing to inflation.
According to him, no nation can experience meaningful economic growth or attract investments when lives and property are not adequately protected. He stressed that the security of citizens must remain the foremost responsibility of government, calling for a comprehensive review of existing security strategies.
Senator Akanbi also expressed deep concern over the continued abduction of schoolchildren and teachers, particularly the case involving the 42 pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. He called on security agencies to intensify efforts toward securing their immediate and safe release. The Okanlomo of Ibadanland further appealed to the abductors to heed the voice of reason and humanity, praying that Almighty God would touch their hearts and grant them the compassion to release the innocent victims unharmed so they can be reunited with their families. He noted that the future of any society is tied to the education of its children and that schools must never become targets of criminal activities.
To address the broader security challenges, Senator Akanbi advocated for the strengthening of community policing and intelligence gathering at the grassroots level. He argued that local communities possess valuable information that can assist security agencies in identifying criminal elements before they strike. He maintained that involving traditional institutions, community leaders, local vigilante groups, and residents in security architecture would significantly improve the fight against crime and criminality.
The former lawmaker also underscored the importance of voter registration and the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), describing them as essential components of democratic participation. He urged all eligible Nigerians, especially young people, to register as voters and ensure they collect their PVCs ahead of future elections.
According to Senator Akanbi, voter registration and PVC collection are paramount because they represent the people's power to influence governance and determine the direction of the country. He noted that citizens who fail to participate in the electoral process inadvertently surrender their voices and their future to others.
The Okanlomo of Ibadanland further urged political actors and citizens to uphold the sanctity of the electoral process. He strongly condemned vote buying and vote selling, describing them as major obstacles to good governance and democratic development. He warned that exchanging votes for temporary financial benefits often results in years of poor leadership, neglect, and underdevelopment.
He called on voters to carefully assess candidates based on competence, integrity, character, performance, and commitment to public service rather than ethnic, religious, or monetary considerations.
"Democracy can only thrive when citizens actively participate in the process. Registering to vote, collecting your PVC, rejecting vote buying, and making informed choices are fundamental responsibilities of every citizen. The ballot remains the most powerful tool available to the people for correcting what is wrong and charting a better course for future generations," he stated.
Senator Akanbi concluded by calling for unity, patriotism, and renewed commitment to nation-building. He expressed optimism that Nigeria can overcome its present challenges through responsible leadership, active citizenship, economic reforms, and a robust security framework that prioritizes the protection of lives and property.
He wished all Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Democracy Day celebration and prayed for lasting peace, security, prosperity, and progress in Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.
