The Ogun State Commissioner for Forestry, Engr Taiwo Oludotun, has extended warm felicitations to Muslims and Christians across the state and the country on the simultaneous commencement of the 2026 Ramadan fast and the Christian Lenten season, both beginning on February 18.
In a goodwill message issued on Tuesday, the commissioner described the rare alignment of the two important religious observances as a profound spiritual period that should inspire Nigerians to reflect on shared values of love, sacrifice, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
Oludotun noted that the overlap of Ramadan and Lent presents a unique opportunity for adherents of Islam and Christianity to deepen their faith and strengthen bonds across religious divides. He urged Nigerians to use the season to promote unity, compassion and support for one another, especially the vulnerable in society.
He encouraged Muslims to observe Ramadan with devotion by embracing its core principles of self-discipline, charity, patience and compassion. He equally called on Christians to approach the Lenten season with humility, prayer, repentance and acts of kindness in line with the teachings of the Christian faith.
The commissioner urged members of the Muslim Ummah to reflect on the virtues of , particularly his teachings on generosity, tolerance and peaceful living. He also advised Christians to emulate the humility, sacrifice and compassion exemplified by as they journey through the 40-day Lenten period.
“The simultaneous observance of Ramadan and Lent reminds us that despite differences in our religious traditions, we share common values of sacrifice, devotion, discipline and service to humanity,” he said. “This sacred period should encourage us to extend love to our neighbours, assist the less privileged and work together for peace and development in our communities.”
Oludotun further appealed to Nigerians to use the period for prayers for national unity, economic stability and lasting peace. According to him, collective prayers and good deeds during the fasting seasons can help foster harmony and strengthen national cohesion.
He also called on religious leaders to continue promoting interfaith dialogue and cooperation, stressing that the coincidence of both seasons offers a platform for Muslims and Christians to collaborate on charitable initiatives and community development efforts.
Across the country, faithful of both religions are expected to mark the beginning of Ramadan and Lent with special prayers, fasting and humanitarian outreach. Observers say the simultaneous observance of the two seasons could further deepen mutual understanding and respect among Nigeria’s diverse religious communities.
Oludotun concluded his message by wishing Muslims and Christians a spiritually fulfilling period of fasting and reflection, expressing hope that the lessons of sacrifice, tolerance and compassion learned during Ramadan and Lent would translate into lasting peace, unity and sustainable development in Nigeria.
